Omega-3’s Can Save Your Life

 Are you getting enough Omega-3 fats in your diet? Omega-3 deficiency is responsible for many different life threatening ailments and 96,000 premature deaths each year! Yikes! Americans eat far more Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3's in their diet. Omega-6's are found in soy, corn,  and canola oils as well as other sources. What is important to know when talking about Omega-3’s and Omega-6’s is the ratio between the two. We want a ratio of 1:1. Because our Western diet is high in Omega-6's and so deficient in Omega-3’s we must take supplements.

Like the earlier post about water, there are so many benefits of Omega 3’s, so I will just list a few…

1.)  Decreases pain and inflammation- Studies show people who suffer from autoimmune diseases such as RA, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma, respond well to DHA and EPA supplementation.
2.)  Better Brain Function-Earl Mindell, RPh PhD, writes in Earl Mindell's Supplement Bible, “There's a reason why fish is known as brain food. It is a rich source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fatty acid that is found in high concentration in the gray matter of the brain. DHA is instrumental in the function of brain cell membranes, which are important for the transmission of brain signals.”
3.)  Heart health-According to the American Heart Association, research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids decrease risk of arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats), which can lead to sudden death.  Omega-3 fatty acids also decrease triglyceride levels, slow growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure (slightly).
4.)  Strong Bones- According to the British Journal of Nutrition, the omega-3 fat DHA “appears to be a vital constituent of marrow and enhances bone mineral content.”

Supplementing your diet with high quality fish oil is important for optimal health and wellness.   1. I've heard a lot about Omega-3 and its benefits. It contains healthy fats which is good for the heart and definitely good for dieting.
