Boosting Your Immune System

It seems as though the viruses going around this year are extra powerful. Even if you don't usually get sick, it seems as though even the strongest are succumb to the power of the cold and flu germs.

Immune Boosting Foods and Supplements

Vitamin C- Vitamin C has many benefits, one benefit is that it increases the production of infection fighting white blood cells. Foods that are high in vitamin C are guava, strawberries, kiwi, and oranges.

Vitamin E- One of the many benefits of vitamin E is that it increases the production of killer cells that seek to destroy germs and cancer cells. Supplements are usually necessary to get enough vitamin E. Foods that are high in vitamin E are nuts, seeds, and broccoli.

Carotenoids- Beta carotene that your body converts to Vitamin A, which has immune enhancing properties and can help prevent cancer. (Too much Vitamin A is toxic, so it is best to get it from food.) Foods with carotenoids are orange colored fruits and veggies like carrots, mangoes, apricots, and sweet potatoes.

Bioflavenoids- This group of phytonutrients help protect the cell membranes against environmental polutants. Eating a diet with 6 servings of fresh veggies and fruit will help boost your immune systems need for bioflavenoids.

Zinc- This mineral increases production of white blood cells that fight infections more aggressively.  Foods high in zinc are oysters, crab, grass-fed beef, dark turkey meat, and beans. An added bonus is that Zinc also helps with libido.

Garlic- Garlic has so many good properties and should be eaten daily. This is a powerful immune booster and has many antiviral properties. If you don't like fresh garlic, you can get garlic in supplement form.

Selenium-  This mineral again increases killer cells and has cancer fighting properties. Foods high in selenium are tuna, red snapper, lobster, whole grains, and fresh veggies.

Omega 3's- Omega 3's are so powerful in aiding in immune function. Studies show that children taking a 1/2 tsp of flax oil experience fewer and less severe respiratory infections and fewer days of being absent from school. I recommend taking Carlson's cod liver oil or Pharmax fish oil every day.
